Mary will lead MHA’s federal policy work, focusing on policy issues that align with MHA’s overarching philosophy of addressing mental health Before Stage 4 – including support for early intervention for children and youth; the fight to ensure access to treatment; improvement of quality of treatment; reduction of homelessness, incarceration, and discrimination; and ultimately the movement of a system towards one where people are treated with dignity and prevention of mental health problems is prioritized.
“We are so excited to have Mary join the MHA family,” said Paul Gionfriddo, president and CEO, MHA. “She brings a wealth of policy knowledge, federal advocacy expertise, emotional intelligence, and a sincere commitment and passion for working on behalf of all people with mental health conditions.”
Giliberti most recently served as CEO of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), a position she held for five years. She also served for three years as NAMI’s Director of Public Policy and Advocacy for federal and state issues. Prior to NAMI she served as a Section Chief in the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Prior to that, Mary served as Disability Counsel for the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions and senior attorney at the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law. She is a graduate of Harvard College and Yale Law School.
“I am thrilled to join MHA and continue advocating for the rights of those with mental health conditions,” said Giliberti. “Now more than ever, it’s important to continue our efforts in Washington to advance policies that prioritize prevention, early identification and intervention, access to integrated care, and insurance parity for people with mental health conditions.”
Giliberti will start her new position at MHA on October 15, 2019.
