A note on language: Terminology around cultural identity evolves over time. These materials will primarily use the phrase "communities of Indigenous American descent." This includes people from various tribal nations and cultural backgrounds within Turtle Island. (Turtle Island is an indigenous-centered term for North America.) Government and academic data cited may use other identifiers. These include: American Indian and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) and Native Americans.
